Participatory Action Research in Morocco

SHARE

In Morocco, Participatory Action Research is implemented in Mohammedia, specifically in Al-Hassania and Darb Al-Shabab neighborhoods.

Mohammedia is a city located on the Atlantic coast, near the commercial center of Morocco, Casablanca. The city is known for its port and considered a hub of large industries that drive the local economy. However, the Al-Hassania and Darb Al-Shabab neighborhoods are marginalized areas that are situated near the market and industrial zone. These areas house a high population of citizens with low to average income. Many young people find job opportunities in the market, but these jobs offer little financial security. The neighborhoods have a large demographic of young people, women, and children who face various challenges. The area's proximity to industrial zones and informal markets limits access to quality education, which is vital for future growth. Public schools may not provide the same level of education as private institutions, which worsens economic struggles. The unpredictable nature of the informal market contributes to insecure livelihoods, deepening economic vulnerability. Environmental risks such as pollution from industrial areas and informal markets also pose significant challenges, especially for children, amplifying overall insecurity in these communities.

In these neighborhoods, various civil society associations operate in different fields. However, there is a widespread lack of trust towards civil society among the residents, who are mainly concerned about the financial transparency of these organizations. Despite this, some community members actively engage in civil society initiatives.

In addressing the challenges faced by the Al-Hassania and Darb Al-Shabab neighborhoods, a group of eight civil society actors, consisting of women and men of different ages, designed and implemented participatory action research in collaboration with diverse community members. Together, they identified environmental security as one of the main focuses of the action research. Mohammedia has grappled with pollution-related issues for a long period, impacting public health and the overall sense of security among residents. The initiative aims to fill the gap left by the absence of necessary interventions from stakeholders in addressing these pressing concerns.

The actors shared their reflections on implementing the Action Research with HSC:

“There's no wrong or right answer; each of us has their own experiences and ideas. This research allowed us to listen to and learn from one another.” “Participatory Action Research enabled us to communicate with the community surrounding us, listen to the problems it suffers from due to environmental pollution, and participate in finding appropriate solutions, which resulted in a sense of strength and safety.”
