Risky Business is a new podcast series from Human Security Collective exploring the challenges nonprofits face under the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) counter-terrorism financing framework. In this series, we examine FATF Recommendation 8 (R8) and the exceptionalism that was meted out to the nonprofit sector in the fight against terrorism financing, unpacking its consequences and the evolving impact on civil society.
Through three critical perspectives—R8 itself, the national context, and the market—this podcast delves into the challenges nonprofits face within the web of legislative, regulatory, and policy developments designed to combat financial crime. We also examine FATF accountability, its decision-making processes, and the impact of its policies on civil society worldwide.
Over the course of the series, we pose the question: should we continue refining FATF Recommendation 8 and its national implementation through an evolutionary approach, or is it time for a more revolutionary approach—one that completely reimagines how nonprofits are treated within the global framework?
Hosted by Sangeeta Goswami, Thalia Malmberg, and Floor Knoote, this series is based on the foresight piece 'The Future of FATF Recommendation 8', co-authored by the hosts along with Lia van Broekhoven. This podcast is funded by FICS.
