Internship Opportunity: Human Rights Project Support Intern
HSC is looking for an intern from beginning of February 2025 through to end of July 2025, to support in the Move 4 Human Rights (M4HR) and the Civic Horizons projects. M4HR is a collaboration between various human rights organizations and educational institutions in the Netherlands, where HSC facilitates workshops with students and coaches them in developing small-scale Participatory Action Research projects. Civic Horizons is a regional consortium present in six countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon) working on improving conditions for Civil Society to defend human rights in the region. As part of this project, HSC will facilitate conversations between various stakeholders on drivers of shrining civic space based . The HSC team is a small one, where you will have a lot of opportunities for growth when initiative is taken. You’ll get insight into how an organization like ours works, exposure and training to co-facilitate some of our sessions with us, and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a high-impact project.

Location: The Hague / Remote
Duration: 1 February 2025 – 1 August 2025
Days: 3 days per week, and for two full weeks during the Summer Edition
The internship remuneration is € 300 per month. Travel costs will be reimbursed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Workshop Logistics:
-Assist in organizing the engagement between civil society organizations and various stakeholders online and in Brussels
-Assist in planning and organizing the sessions, including managing schedules, materials, and participant communication
-Support on ensuring evaluation surveys are filled in and the logistical requirements are taken care of - Co-Facilitation:
-Get hands-on experience by supporting the facilitation of selected workshop sessions (on topics including human rights, human security, gender, and others), under mentorship of HSC team
-Participate in prep and debrief meetings with HSC team where we share observations and learnings from the sessions - Summer Edition Coordination:
-Help with organizing and executing the M4HR Summer Edition, coordinating between venues, partner organizations and ensuring a seamless experience for all participants - Communications Support:
-Collaborate with the communications team to ensure timely updates, materials, and outreach efforts
Help come up with new ideas on how to showcase the M4HR project, together with the communication team
What We’re Looking For:
- Strong Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Proactive Attitude: Eager to take initiative and learn on the go
- Experience in Planning/Coordinating an Event: Ability to anticipate what would need to be arranged and ensure we stay on track
- Good Communication: Written and verbal skills to coordinate with diverse stakeholders, in English and in Dutch
- Interest in Learning: Curiosity about facilitation, event planning, and communications
- Interest in Human Rights and Social Justice
- Must be a student

About the M4HR Project:
Move 4 Human Rights is an MDT* project in collaboration between human rights organizations and educational institutions based in The Netherlands. This project offers young people the opportunity to bridge theory and practice by engaging in critical issues surrounding human rights, social justice, and inclusivity. Through specialized skill training sessions, participants will have the chance to:
• Conduct action research on human rights issues they feel passionate about
• Contribute ideas on how to improve human rights-based policy in the Netherlands
• Advocate for gender equality and drive meaningful change
The organizations involved include Human Security Collective, Justice & Peace Netherlands, Stichting Our Bodies Our Voice, and Human Rights in the Picture. Partner educational institutions include The Hague University of Applied Sciences, University of Twente, and Erasmus University College.
*MDT (Maatschappelijke Diensttijd) is a voluntary social service program initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. At Human Security Collective, we are proud to be one of the implementing organizations of MDT. MDT offers young people between the ages of 12 and 30 a unique opportunity to volunteer for a minimum of 80 hours during a maximum period of 6 months and make a positive impact in their communities. Through MDT, youth have the chance to explore their talents, connect with others, and contribute to meaningful causes.
About Civic Horizons project:
Civic Horizons is a regional consortium present in six countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon) and composed of the following organizations: Arab Institute for Human Rights, Munathara Initiative, New Tactics for Human Rights, Iraqi AlAmal Organization, Fezzan Libya, Arab Women’s Organization and Human Security Collective.
We seek to improve conditions for Civil Society (CS) through broadening their support and opening civic space. The project pilots a holistic approach that brings together sets of strategies, tools, and knowledge that address the operational space of civil society through policy and legal lenses, as well as social and cultural lenses—with intersectionality and human rights-based approaches as a methodological backbone.
In this last stage of the implementation of the project, the focus will lie on:
- The dissemination of research results
- The facilitation of conversations between civil society organization and the relevant stakeholders
- Advocate for better policies and practices that will create openings for civil society organizations operating in restrictive environements
